Vaginoplasty can be for aesthetic reasons and also  for less known reconstructive reason (in MRKH syndrome).

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, also known as Müllerian agenesis, is a congenital condition where a female is born with a missing or underdeveloped uterus and cervix, and often with a shortened or absent vagina. This means individuals with MRKH syndrome typically cannot menstruate and cannot carry a pregnancy. It's important to note that individuals with MRKH syndrome have normal ovaries and female chromosomes, so they are normal females who have absent vagina with mostly no child bearing.

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure often performed on individuals with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome to create a functional vagina.  It is a valuable surgical option for women with MRKH syndrome, enabling them to have a functional vagina and potentially a more fulfilling sex life. It has a significant emotional impact, and psychological support which is crucial for patients and their families.

  • McIndoe procedure:

This involves creating a space for the vagina and lining it with a skin graft, often from the buttocks or thigh.

  • Surgical experience:

Vaginoplasty should be performed by experienced Plastic  surgeons like Dr Triveni Dhaka who are familiar with the various techniques and potential complications.

  • Patient selection:

Vaginoplasty is typically recommended for physically and psychologically mature women who are ready to engage in sexual activity.

  • Post-operative care:

Dilators are often used after surgery to maintain the vaginal canal's shape and prevent narrowing or closure.

  • Potential complications:

As with any surgery, vaginoplasty can have potential complications, including infection, bleeding, scarring, and narrowing of the vaginal canal.

  • Fertility options:

While MRKH patients cannot carry a pregnancy themselves, they can explore options like egg donation and surrogacy to have biological children.
